Artificial Intelligence has rapidly moved from experimentation to execution. Organisations across every industry are exploring how AI can automate processes, improve operational efficiency and unlock entirely new business opportunities.

AI does not operate in isolation. It relies on a continuous flow of information generated by connected devices, sensors and systems operating at the edge. As organisations increasingly depend on AI to support, and in some cases make, operational decisions, the quality of those decisions is determined by something much more fundamental than the intelligence of the model itself.
It depends on trust.
Not trust as a marketing term, but trust as an operational requirement. Can the identity of the device generating the data be verified? Has the firmware remained authentic? Can the integrity of the information reaching the AI model be trusted?
If the answer to those questions is uncertain, every decision, and every action, built on that data becomes uncertain as well.
Security has become a business enabler
For many years, cybersecurity was primarily viewed as a way to reduce risk. Organisations implemented security because regulations required it or because audits demanded it. Too often, it became a technical layer added towards the end of product development.
That way of thinking no longer reflects the reality organisations face today.
As AI, edge computing and autonomous systems become increasingly embedded in critical infrastructure, industrial automation, healthcare and defence, security is evolving from a protective measure into a strategic business capability.
Its role is no longer limited to defending connected systems against cyberattacks. Its role is to establish the trust that allows organisations to confidently adopt AI and autonomous technologies.
Without trust, organisations will never exploit the full potential of AI.
Trust starts at the foundation
The discussion is no longer about securing individual connected devices. It is about establishing confidence across entire ecosystems of connected devices that increasingly support decisions, and autonomous actions, without direct human intervention.
This raises a different question
How can an AI system be trusted if the devices supplying its data cannot first prove their own identity?
Trust starts by returning to the fundamentals.
The foundation of every connected device has always been hardware. Every connected device should be able to establish its identity. Every system should be able to verify the authenticity of the information it receives. Trust should not be assumed, it should be embedded.
Only then can organisations confidently build AI-driven services, autonomous operations and connected ecosystems that people are willing to rely on.
A board-level conversation
The rise of AI is also changing the role of business leadership. AI is no longer simply an innovation initiative. It is becoming a strategic capability that influences competitiveness, operational resilience and long-term growth.
As a result, conversations about trusted devices, resilient digital infrastructure and cybersecurity can no longer remain within engineering or security teams alone. They increasingly belong in discussions about investment decisions, product roadmaps and long-term business strategy.
Security is no longer an add-on.
It is becoming an inherent characteristic of every connected product.
Preparing for tomorrow starts today
Organisations that recognise this shift today will be far better positioned to embrace AI with confidence tomorrow. Those that continue treating security as a late-stage technical requirement risk limiting the very innovation they hope to achieve.
The organisations that fully exploit the potential of AI will not necessarily be those with the most advanced algorithms. They will be the organisations that build those algorithms on trusted devices, trusted data and trusted digital foundations.
Because in the autonomous age, trust is no longer a nice-to-have. It is what makes everything else possible.
